iTunes

Started by Steve Jobs, Ronald Wayne and Steve Wozniak who opened the iTunes store in 2003. iTunes is a media management software, allowing customers to manage and play audio and video files on their computers. This free software can be downloaded from Apple’s Download iTunes Page.

iTunes started to allow users to purchase, download, organise and listen to their music using just one application, allowing users to legally stream their music to other Mac’s without the hassle of copying files from computer to computer. The big idea was to move consumers from purchasing music illegally to making music easy to find and download without any computer viruses. iTunes makes it money from royalties and  30% of iTunes revenue goes towards Apple.

In the first week of iTunes release customers brought more than a million songs. To this date iTunes store has served more than 10 billion songs, 20 million TV Shows, 2 million films and 3 billion apps. Now having 125 million iTunes users.

Apple looks into offering ways for web app developers to sell subscriptions or one-off access to their web apps via iTunes. Also create e-books for their iPads challenging competitors such as the Kindle. iTunes was created to make music companies happy as they have over 2,000 songs from BMG, EMI, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal and Warner. Allowing them to stable recognition in the music industry.
